I AM 4 ORR and you should be, too! Its time the NHL established the Bobby Orr Award for Best Offensive Defenceman
In over 100 years of professional hockey there have been only a handful of players that have completely transcended the game. With apologies to Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky and the late Maurice "Rocket" Richard, perhaps no one else in the game has had as much creative and transformative impact on the game as the great Bobby Orr.
Currently the majority of NHL awards go to forwards with the Art Ross (most points) and Rocket Richard (most goals) trophies being virtual locks for forwards - while the Selke Trophy is given to the league's best Defensive Forward. Meanwhile, there is only one NHL trophy, the Norris, specifically intended for top defenseman. Let's fix that.
It's time the NHL officially recognized Bobby Orr for his incredible contribution to the game by establishing the Bobby Orr award for Best Offensive Defenseman. Orr's accomplishments are legendary and will never be duplicated. Bobby Orr wasn't just an extraordinarily NHL player. Time has proven that was a truly professional athlete and that his accomplishments are some of the greatest ever in all of professional sports.
Here is a sampling of Bobby Orrs hockey accomplishments:
- Six straight 100 point seasons
- Two time scoring champion (Art Ross Trophy - only defenseman to do so)
- Two time winner of Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP.
- Two Stanley Cup winning goals. 1970 and 1972.
- First player in NHL history to record 100+ assists. 102- 1971.
- Highest recorded +/- in NHL history in one season, + 124 in 1971.
- Most points on season by a defenseman 139 in 1971.
- Calder Trophy for rookie of the year.
- First player in NHL history to win a league award in eight consecutive seasons, Norris Trophy 1968-1975, inclusive.
- MVP of inaugural Canada Cup, 1976.
Simply put, Orr transformed the role of the defenseman in hockey and the sport is much, much richer because of him. It's time the NHL recognized this by creating the Bobby Orr award for Best Offensive Defenseman.
